Windows 7 & SIP

Postby willprentice » Mon Feb 08, 2010 8:57 pm

I hope someone can help as my old (faithful) XP laptop has just died and my new one has Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

I've read on the website that so far only the X-Lite beta is compatible with Windows 7 so I have downloaded and installed it but it keeps crashing so i have had to revert back to the old x-lite which seems to work ok (with the exception of the telephone number drawer having limited functionality)

Also - and more importantly - I use a system that allows me to click to dial and this doesnt work either.

At first when I clicked-to-dial i got the following message: 'Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (sip) isn't associated with any program.'

(The same happenes when i put sip:01342xxxxxxx into the Firefox browser whereas before it dialed)

However, having uninstalled and reinstalled (as Administrator) it now doesnt do anything at all!!!

I have looked for a resolution of the internet, and it seems as though I need the SIP URL scheme active on my system.

Other forums say that the following should be present within the registry - which it is; HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT / SIP / SHELL / OPEN / COMMAND / Default - "C:\Program Files (x86)\CounterPath\X-Lite\x-lite.exe" -dial="%1"

However in Firefox options / Applications SIP is only associated with 'Use x-lite .exe'

Does anyone have any idea what I can do to make it work?

Mnay thanks

Will

p.s Ive tried Telify and that doesnt work either!!!

Does it work in IE? That is what we support.
(Although I assumed that it would work in alternative browswers as well.)

as far as I know this is all that should be necessary:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT / SIP / SHELL / OPEN / COMMAND / Default - "C:\Program Files (x86)\CounterPath\X-Lite\x-lite.exe" -dial="%1"

NOTE: For Bria 3 the line should be:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\CounterPath\Bria 3.0\Bria30.exe" -action=call?to="%1"

Unfortunately no.
The registry entry should be all that is needed.

Are you running X-Lite 3 in compatibility mode? If yes, then - for which version of Windows? I have not tried this (I don't use Win 7) but I have heard that it uses an automated process to determine which previous version of Windows is the most-appropriate (e.g., it may choose Win XP SP2 or Vista SP1). I believe this is initiated by choosing the "troubleshoot compatibility" menu entry right-clicking on the X-Lite program.

Kamen, thanks for the post.

I'm not sure what you mean by compatibility mode? I've run the troubleshoot compatibility option and now the xlite pops when i click my dial button (or put SIP:the number in my browser), but it doesnt dial! The troubleshoot just comes back with 'Incompatible application'!

The bit i dont get is that when i go to Firefox / Options / Applications SIP is using x-lite.exe rather than "C:\Program Files (x86)\CounterPath\X-Lite\x-lite.exe" -dial="%1" as it always used to be.

"C:\Program Files (x86)\CounterPath\X-Lite\x-lite.exe" -dial="%1" is in the registry (HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT / SIP / SHELL / OPEN / COMMAND / Default - "C:\Program Files (x86)\CounterPath\X-Lite\x-lite.exe" -dial="%1")

Any more ideas will be greatfully recieved.

Kind Regards

I wish I could help but I don't know much about Windows 7. You must be running it in some compatibility mode because x-Lite 3 will not run under Windows 7. I wonder if you could set the compatibility mode manually and see which version works. You should be able to search the Internet for tips about running apps in compatibility mode in Win 7. Good luck!
